Timing is Everything

We are an impatient society. With so many innovations, electronics, and tools at our disposal, we have become accustomed to instant gratification. I pull in my driveway and ask “Alexa” to turn on my porch lights and other lights in my dark house. Restaurants have robots that deliver meals to the tables. Tractors have onboard computers that can calculate crop yield, fertilizer and pesticide needs, and fuel consumption. To quote a line from the original movie “Sweet November,” “Hurry, hurry, ding, ding.”

There is a time for everything. Fruits and vegetables should be picked when ripe for best quality. If we harvest too soon or too late, we run the risk of produce that is under or overripe (there are some fruits that will continue to ripen after they’re picked). When we rush through or even second-guess what we know is the best course of action, we set ourselves up for missing out on the best part—growing and learning through life experiences. We’re not meant to just shuttle from one activity or crisis to the next. We’re here for a greater purpose. Each of us is different and has our own place in this world. Color yours brightly.

When I’m faced with a challenge, small or large, I do ask, “What am I supposed to learn from this?” Sometimes the answer comes quickly, sometimes it’s a process, too. (Psalm 37:7, Genesis 16:1-4)

Life is a journey. Enjoy it. Hey, we’re all going through something—some worse than others. Look for the joy and dwell there.
