Love is such a multifaceted emotion left open to interpretation by the giver and the recipient. As the giver, why are you giving?
“If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:3
You give or donate out of love, a generous heart, the desire to help, the need to lower your tax liability, the desire to look benevolent. The condition of your heart when you give is more important than how much or what you give. When you give without expecting anything in return, that is when your heart is full and the rewards are greatest. Giving without expectation of anything in return is the sign of a humble heart.
You gain love and joy from knowing that your gift is helpful and of value, not from the accolades that you receive as the giver of good things (hubris). The recipient will almost always benefit from your gift. What will you gain from the giving?
