It’s been said that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” So, it’s subjective and in this context, what is pleasing to the eye. We equate beauty with the aesthetic of the senses, limiting the immensity of what it really is.
Take a moment and think outside the normal brown box of what everyone accepts as beauty. The images, the scents, the sounds that encompass our basic concept of what pleases the senses. Think of the raw, the worn, and broken. The beauty of their spirit and strength. The sheer elemental beauty of a mother laboring to give birth to her child. The warrior battling seen and unseen foes in a bid to survive another day. Those who sacrifice in big ways and small ways every day to make sure we all live a safe life, a better life. This is real beauty. (John 3:16)
We tend to focus on the exquisite art, music, and natural wonders of our world and overlook the magnificence of the human spirit. The next time the world tries to sell you the snake oil version of beauty, pause and remember the resilience and remarkable strength of people.
