Completeness

When you rely on others to “make you” happy or complete who you are, that road leads to disillusionment. Others will disappoint us, no one is perfect, and that’s the beauty of people. Yet our very nature encourages us to seek out like-souls and opposite-minded people to help us grow. Do we need others to complete us?

We’ve read and heard about the phrase he or she “completes me,” or someone being “the other half of their soul.” These are beautiful expressions, but what happens when your other half, your friends, your children don’t meet your expectations? Hmm, now we’re in a quandary as to whether or not they actually do complete us or are our other half. Don’t set yourself up for the disappointment of unrealistic expectations from the people who enrich your life. They’re living a life that maybe you’re not enriching; you’re just local color on the canvas of their existence. It’s okay. Your wholeness is found within yourself. The person you are creating every day with the help of the people you meet.

Enjoy the people who enrich your life and are helping you become the person you want to be. Don’t expect them to make you into that person or complete you. That’s your job. (Colossians 2:9-10)
