Sense of Hearing

Music, conversations, birdsong, my dogs chiding me for forgetting their snacks, Samson (my bull) lowing deeply as I walk to the fence, rain hitting a metal roof, snow falling—I close my eyes and listen closely to the sound of snow hitting the shrubs, bare branches, evergreens—these are the sounds of my world. The sounds of your world are different, but just as beautiful. I love these sounds, even Remy and Dazey (my dogs) fussing at me because these are the sounds of my beautiful life. A life well lived. I wouldn’t trade it for another’s life or a different life.

Every sound in my world has a different meaning and evokes memories. I’m blessed to live on my childhood farm, so there are a plethora of memories. With age comes, I hope, wisdom and a greater appreciation for the simple pleasures of life—actually sitting still and not only seeing a hummingbird bird hover and feed, but hearing the whirr, whizz, zoom of their wings as they zip about. We can manufacture whatever sound we can imagine, but the sounds of nature are truly magnificent and the gifts of a loving Creator. (Genesis 1:24-27)

The sounds of your world are different from mine, but no less special. You may not hear them for the “noise” of the outside world. If you don’t take time to appreciate the sounds of the life you’ve created, you’re missing out on the fruits of your labors.

Choose a spot somewhere in your house, yard, or a special place. Close your eyes, sit quietly, and let the sounds of your universe envelop and soothe your soul. Cherish the sounds of your world; they are precious and a priceless gift.
